The genus Helicarion previously included six or more species, such as Helicarion nigra. However, a 2018 revision has resulted in just 3 species in Australia, with just 2 on the east coast. Helicarion cuvieri includes several 'clades', with differences in colour and anatomy, but these are no longer considered to be full species. The range of H. cuvieri includes Tasmania, Victoria, and southern NSW. H. mastersii has a more restricted range, from north of Nowra to southern Sydney.
